Thanks to the Guardian™ app, OnStar® emergency services aren’t just for your car anymore. Now, GM is expanding Guardian™ to be even more useful by making it compatible with Amazon Alexa.

With the new OnStar® Guardian™ skill, subscribers can take advantage of Alexa’s voice-activated technology to summon emergency assistance at home. Uttering the words “Alexa, call for help” will connect users to trained OnStar® advisors, who are always on standby to help out if there’s a fire, medical crisis, or other emergency.

“Through our collaboration with Amazon, people can now have access to OnStar’s Emergency-Certified Advisors in a place where they spend so much of their time — their home,” said Pam Fletcher, vice president of GM Global Innovation. “This is another great example of how we’re expanding the safety and security of OnStar® beyond the vehicle to help more people, which demonstrates GM’s commitment to its growth strategy and innovating its software-enabled services.”

First, GM plans to provide the Guardian™ skill for current OnStar® subscribers, notifying those eligible with an email on how to sign up. Then, in 2022, the company will make the Guardian™ skill more widely available to anyone in the U.S. who owns a compatible Alexa voice assistant.

Whether or not you have Alexa, OnStar® Guardian™ is a great investment for your safety and peace of mind. As part of your subscription, you’ll have access to a smartphone app with mobile crash response and roadside assistance services for when you’re driving. Guardian™ also provides emergency assistance and location status services that you can use from anywhere.
